Key Takeaways

  • New Year's Eve 2026 is a Thursday, so the countdown rolls into a three-day weekend for anyone with January 1 off.
  • In past years most big countdowns were free to attend: Times Square, Copacabana, Lisbon's riverfront, New Orleans, Mexico City's Reforma party, the Las Vegas Strip, and most of Sydney's vantage points.
  • Edinburgh's Street Party is ticketed and 12+ only; Hogmanay 2026/27 runs December 29 to January 1, with the Street Party on December 31 from 8 p.m.
  • Sydney's official 2026 site lists fireworks at 9 p.m. and midnight, so families can watch the early show.
  • Expect closures and special transit rules: Rio needed a prepaid metro pass in past years, Lisbon closed its riverside metro station at 5 p.m. in 2025, and the Las Vegas Strip closed to cars by 8 p.m. in 2024.

New Year's Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday, so for anyone who gets January 1 off, the countdown rolls straight into a three-day weekend. That makes this a good year to go somewhere for it. The catch is that the best places to spend New Year's Eve are the same places everyone else wants that week, so the earlier you choose, the more choice you get. This guide covers nine places, in the order the clock reaches midnight, mixing big-ticket trips with cheap New Year's Eve getaways, warm and cold, in the US and abroad. For each one you get what the night is actually like, what is free and what needs a ticket, what closes, how to get home, and who it suits.

How we checked the details. Every date, time, ticket rule, closure, and crowd figure below comes from the official city, event, or tourism site, or from local news reporting official statements, checked in early November 2026, and each one is cited. Most cities had not announced their 2026 plans yet. Where that is the case, we tell you what happened in past years and name the year, so you know what to confirm. Check the official page again the week before you travel.

First, pick the kind of night you want. New Year's Eve trips split three ways. There is the giant free public crowd: Times Square, Copacabana, the riverfronts in Lisbon and New Orleans, the Strip in Las Vegas. There is the ticketed party, where you pay for a guaranteed spot and a bit more space, like Edinburgh's Street Party or the paid harbourside spots in Sydney. And there is the local-style night, where you join in rather than watch, which is what Reykjavik does best. Decide that first and the list below gets much shorter.

1. Sydney: fireworks over the harbour, twice. Sydney is the big summer New Year's Eve, and of these nine cities it is the first to reach midnight. The City of Sydney's official site for New Year's Eve 2026 says fireworks light the harbour at 9 p.m. and again at midnight [6], so families with young kids can watch the early show and still get to bed. The site lists 48 vantage points around the harbour [6]. Most are free to walk into, a few need a free ticket, and many are alcohol-free zones [7]. The rest are ticketed events: on the official list, Taronga Zoo's packages ran from A$125 to A$1,000, and several harbour islands were already sold out when we checked [8]. Free tickets for the Sydney Opera House forecourt are listed for release at 10 a.m. on December 26 [8].

Sydney tips and costs. The free spots work on a first-come basis, so pick yours on the official vantage point map before the day, check whether it allows alcohol, and plan to stay put once you are in. The fireworks themselves cost nothing; the real spend is the long flight and a room for the week, so book both early. Who it suits: couples and friends who want a summer New Year's Eve, and families who are happy with the 9 p.m. show.

2. Edinburgh: Hogmanay, the four-day version. Scotland's capital turns New Year into a festival. Edinburgh's Hogmanay 2026/27 runs from December 29, 2026 to January 1, 2027 [3]. The official program opens with the Torchlight Procession on December 29 at 6:30 p.m., has a Night Afore party with The Fratellis on December 30, and puts the Street Party and a concert in the Gardens headlined by Underworld on December 31, both starting at 8 p.m. [1]. On New Year's Day, First Footin' is a free, unticketed live music trail [1]. The Street Party fills Princes Street with 45,000 people [3], and last season the four-day program drew over 115,000 people from 138 countries, according to the organizers [4].

Edinburgh tips and costs. The Street Party is ticketed and strictly 12+: anyone under 16 needs a full-price ticket and an adult over 18 with them, and all 2026/27 tickets are e-tickets [2]. For a sense of price, early-bird Street Party tickets for 2025/26 were £30 plus booking fees, or £24 with a local EH postcode [5], and a limited early-bird release for 2026 went on sale at 2025 prices [4]; check the official site for this year's prices. Bags larger than A3 paper are not allowed, and neither are glass, sharp objects, or umbrellas, but you can bring up to four cans or plastic containers of up to 500 ml each [2]. You will be outside on a December night in Scotland, so dress for cold and wet. Who it suits: friends' groups and couples who want a big party with real tradition behind it. Families with kids under 12 cannot go to the Street Party [2], so build their trip around the other days of the festival.

3. Reykjavik: bonfires, comedy on TV, and a sky full of fireworks. Reykjavik's New Year's Eve is not a show you buy a ticket for. It is the whole city doing it together. For New Year's Eve 2025 the city held ten neighborhood bonfires, nine lit at 8:30 p.m. and the one at Skerjafjörður at 9 p.m. [11]. Bonfires are not lit if the wind is over 10 m/s, and you may not bring fireworks or flares to them, though sparklers are fine [11]. At 10:30 p.m. the city goes quiet as people head indoors to watch Áramótaskaup, the annual comedy special, which ends shortly before midnight [12]. Then the fireworks start. There is no single official display; families set off their own, often into the early hours, and the fireworks are sold by ICE-SAR, the volunteer search and rescue association, from December 28 to January 6 as its biggest fundraiser of the year [12]. Many bars stay open until 5 a.m. [12].

Reykjavik tips and costs. Pick a stay within walking distance of the center and of a bonfire, and have a backup plan in case wind cancels the fires [11]. The city warns that air quality may be poor in the first hours of the new year because of all the fireworks [11], worth knowing if anyone in your group has asthma. Restaurants fill up for New Year's Eve dinner, so book ahead or plan a dinner at your rental. Who it suits: couples and small groups who want something different from a countdown in a crowd, and families with older kids.

4. Lisbon: a free party on the river. If you want a European New Year's Eve without buying a ticket, Lisbon is a strong pick. For New Year's Eve 2025, the city's main party at Praça do Comércio (also called Terreiro do Paço), on the Tagus riverfront, was free to enter, with music from 9:30 p.m. and fireworks over the river at midnight [19]. It is a big outdoor concert in one of the city's grandest squares, with the river right behind the stage.

Lisbon tips and costs. Expect closures and plan your walk in. In 2025 the city cut traffic around Terreiro do Paço from 4 p.m., closed the square to pedestrians and vehicles at 6 p.m. ahead of the party, and shut the Terreiro do Paço metro station at 5 p.m.; the metro ran only until 1 a.m. on New Year's Day, with extra Carris buses added for the night [20]. Stay within walking distance if you can, and know your way home before midnight. The party is free, so your spend is the flight and the room. Who it suits: couples and friends on a mid-range budget, and families who are comfortable in a big crowd.

5. Rio de Janeiro: Copacabana and the biggest crowd on this list. Rio's Réveillon is enormous. For the turn into 2026, the city's tourism office reported more than 5.1 million people at 13 stages across the city, 2.6 million of them on Copacabana Beach, with fireworks fired from 19 barges along the shore for 12 minutes [9]. It happens on a public beach, the music is on open stages, and it is summer.

Rio tips and costs. The city's plan for New Year's Eve 2025 shows how the day works [10]. Avenida Atlântica, the beachfront road, closed to traffic at 7 a.m. on December 31. From 7 p.m. only buses and taxis could enter Copacabana, from 9 p.m. no vehicles at all; side streets reopened to traffic at 5 a.m. on January 1, with part of Avenida Atlântica closed longer [10]. The metro ran a special operation from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.: you needed a round-trip pass bought in advance on the MetrôRio app or website for R$15, sales closed at 6 p.m. on December 31 or sooner if they sold out, and normal cards and contactless payment were not accepted [10]. Bags over 25 liters, bottles, and fireworks were banned on the metro that night [10]. The city also advised carrying ID and an emergency contact, putting an ID wristband on children, and drinking plenty of water [10]. The beach costs nothing; your money goes on flights and a room near the action, so book early. Who it suits: friends' groups who want one of the biggest parties anywhere, and couples who do not mind a crowd. Rio also ran 12 other stages across the city [9], and with small kids one away from Copacabana is likely an easier night.

6. New York: Times Square, and the alternatives. The ball drop is the countdown most Americans picture, and you can be there for free. The Times Square Alliance's FAQ says no tickets are needed for the outdoor celebration [13]. In past years (the FAQ we checked was written for New Year's Eve 2025), viewing areas opened at 3 p.m., access was from Sixth or Eighth Avenue only, backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, and alcohol were not allowed, there were no portable restrooms, and if you left your spot to eat you could not get back to it [13]. In practice that means many hours standing outside in December with no bathroom, which is the honest price of a front-row view.

New York alternatives and costs. For a free and much calmer night with fireworks, Brooklyn's Prospect Park holds a celebration at Grand Army Plaza: for New Year's Eve 2025, entertainment started at 10 p.m. and fireworks at midnight, free, with an optional RSVP [14]. You can also book a dinner, watch the ball on a screen, and step out at midnight. Watching is free in New York; the bill is the hotel room, so compare a stay in Brooklyn or Queens near a subway line with one in Midtown. Who it suits: bucket-list couples and friends with the stamina for the Times Square wait. Families are usually happier at Prospect Park or a restaurant countdown.

7. New Orleans: a free riverfront countdown and a fleur-de-lis drop. New Orleans does New Year's Eve its own way. For the countdown to 2025, the city's tourism board described a free midnight fireworks show along the riverfront, from the Riverwalk to Crescent Park at the French Market, visible from both banks of the Mississippi, produced by the Crescent City Countdown Club and following a midnight fleur-de-lis drop at Jackson Square [17]. For New Year's Eve 2025, French Quarter Festivals ran a free party at Woldenberg Park from 9 p.m. to midnight with live music, ending with the fleur-de-lis drop and fireworks over the river [18].

New Orleans tips and costs. The French Quarter is compact, so stay within walking distance and skip driving and parking on the night. If your group wants a sit-down dinner first, reserve early, then walk down to the river for midnight. The party is free, which makes it a good-value big countdown if you can drive or find a reasonable flight. Who it suits: friends' groups who want live music and a street party without tickets, couples, and families who head home after the fireworks.

8. Mexico City: the budget pick with a free mega-party. For New Year's Eve 2025, Mexico City's government put on a free electronic music party on Paseo de la Reforma at the Angel of Independence, from 6 p.m. on December 31 to 2 a.m. on January 1, and expected more than 200,000 people [21]. Shortly before midnight Mexico City's head of government, Clara Brugada, put the crowd at more than 250,000 [22]. We could not find a 2026 announcement when we wrote this, so check local listings in December.

Mexico City tips and costs. Nights get cool in late December, so pack a jacket. If a quarter of a million people on one avenue is not your idea of fun, book a dinner in one of the neighborhoods near Reforma and join the crowd only for midnight, or skip it and celebrate at a restaurant. For many US travelers this is a shorter flight than Europe, and your hotel and dinner budget can go further than in Manhattan or Las Vegas on the same night; compare live estimates for your dates before you decide. Who it suits: friends' groups on a budget and couples who want a city break with a big free party.

9. Las Vegas: the Strip becomes a giant pedestrian party. Las Vegas is the last city on this list to reach midnight, and in recent years the Strip has closed to cars on New Year's Eve. On New Year's Eve 2024, the Strip was fully closed to vehicle traffic by 8 p.m., and the regional transit agency ran free rides on all routes from 6 p.m. on December 31 to 9 a.m. on January 1 [15]. At midnight, an eight-minute fireworks show launched from the rooftops of nine Strip resorts, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, which expected upward of 340,000 visitors that night [16].

Las Vegas tips and costs. That year, glass and metal containers, coolers, strollers, and bags bigger than 12 by 12 by 6 inches were banned on the Strip and downtown [15], so pack light and leave the big bag at the hotel. Watching the fireworks from the street is free; clubs, shows, and resort parties are ticketed and priced for the occasion. New Year's is a busy week for hotels here, so compare staying a block or two off the Strip. Who it suits: friends' groups and couples. With small kids it is a hard night, starting with the stroller ban [15].

Cheap New Year's Eve getaways: where the countdown is free. The good news for budgets is that most of the big countdowns cost nothing to attend: Times Square and Prospect Park [13] [14], the riverfronts in Lisbon and New Orleans [19] [18], Copacabana's public beach [9], Reforma in Mexico City [21], the Las Vegas Strip [15], Reykjavik's bonfires [11], and most of Sydney's vantage points [7]. The money goes on getting there and sleeping there. So the cheapest New Year's Eve trip is usually a free countdown in a city you can drive to, or one with a direct flight from your home airport, with two or three nights booked early. If you are flexible, arrive December 30 and leave January 2: you avoid traveling on the day itself and still get a recovery day. For more ideas, see our guides to the cheapest places to travel in December and to cheap winter vacations.

Warm or cold? If you want summer for the countdown, Sydney and Rio are in the Southern Hemisphere, where late December is the middle of summer. If you would rather avoid a long-haul flight, our guide to warm winter destinations near the equator has closer options. If cold is part of the fun, Edinburgh, Reykjavik, and New York give you the classic winter New Year's Eve: just plan for hours outdoors.

Who each city suits, at a glance. Couples: Sydney, Lisbon, Reykjavik, New Orleans. Friends' groups: Edinburgh, Rio, Las Vegas, Mexico City, New Orleans. Families: Sydney's 9 p.m. fireworks, Prospect Park in Brooklyn, Reykjavik's bonfires, and an early exit from the New Orleans riverfront. Big bucket-list energy: Times Square, Copacabana, and Hogmanay. Lowest cost to attend: almost all of them, but Lisbon, New Orleans, and Mexico City are the easiest places to keep the whole trip cheap.

Planning New Year's Eve with a group. Group New Year's Eve trips usually fall apart on three things: nobody books the lodging early enough, the money gets awkward, and the group cannot agree on where to go. Book the place you are staying first, because rooms and rentals for that night go fast and are often non-refundable, then book flights. Agree on a budget per person before anyone books anything. And make the choice quickly: put two or three of the cities above in a Jettova trip room and let everyone vote on the destination and the dates, so the decision takes days, not weeks of group chat. Jettova drafts a day-by-day plan with estimated costs and booking links, each friend books their own flight from their own home city, and after the trip anyone can add receipts to the room to work out who owes whom. For the full playbook, read our guide to planning a New Year's Eve group trip.

Ready to pick your countdown? Open the Jettova trip planner, enter your dates and budget, and start from New York or any city on this list. You get a day-by-day plan with estimated costs and real booking links, so you can see what the trip is likely to cost before you spend a dollar. Prices are estimates and change daily, so check the final price when you book.
