What to Pack for Southeast Asia

6 min read

Southeast Asia is hot, humid, and endlessly surprising. What you pack can make or break your trip. After countless trips through Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, here's the no-nonsense packing list.

Clothing is simple: light, breathable, and quick-drying. Pack 4-5 lightweight shirts (cotton-linen blends or moisture-wicking synthetics), 2 pairs of shorts, and 1 pair of light pants. You'll need the pants for temple visits — most temples in Thailand, Cambodia, and Bali require covered knees and shoulders. A lightweight sarong doubles as a temple cover-up, beach blanket, and towel.

Footwear: comfortable sandals for daily wear (Birkenstocks or Tevas), and one pair of light sneakers for hiking and overnight buses. Leave the dress shoes at home — nobody wears them. Flip-flops are fine for beaches and hostels but murder your feet after a full day of walking.

The humidity is real. Expect to sweat through your clothes daily. Quick-dry fabrics are essential — cotton takes forever to dry in 80% humidity. Pack a small packet of laundry detergent and you can hand-wash in your sink. Most guesthouses also offer same-day laundry for $1-2 per kilo.

Sun and bug protection are non-negotiable. A high-SPF reef-safe sunscreen, a wide-brim hat, and quality sunglasses are must-haves. For mosquitoes, bring DEET-based repellent (stronger than what you'll find locally) and consider permethrin-treated clothing if you're heading to rural areas.

A dry bag (10-20L) is the single most useful item for Southeast Asia. It protects your phone and valuables during boat trips, tuk-tuk rides in the rain, and beach days. Get one with a shoulder strap so it doubles as a waterproof daypack.

Medical kit essentials: anti-diarrheal medication (you will need it), oral rehydration salts, basic painkillers, antihistamines for insect bites, and any prescription medication. Pharmacies in Thailand and Vietnam are excellent and cheap, but having basics on hand saves you a trip when you're feeling rough.

What to leave at home: jeans (too hot, too slow to dry), expensive jewelry (theft risk and inappropriate for temples), more than one jacket (you won't need it), and excessive electronics. Southeast Asia is a place to travel light and live simply.
